Search@CSU Library Feedback - Locating Specific Items

With Search@CSU Library, users no longer need to conduct separate searches of the library catalogue and databases to locate items appropriate to their search topic. Rather than having to search multiple databases, users can find all the resources they need in the one place.
Some Search@CSU Library users have commented that this has saved them a lot of time and made better use of the library's resources. Others have reported that the greater number of search results can make finding specific resources difficult.
However, it is possible to narrow your search results to locate specific items. There are several ways of doing this.

How to narrow your search results in Search@CSU Library to find a specific item

1. Before starting your search, on the Library Homepage :

Click on the 'Books, journals, DVDs & more' button. This excludes individual journal articles from your search results.

2. After performing a search

In this example, the item we're trying to locate, Chemistry International, appears as the first result. If you can't immediately see the item you're looking for, you can use the options under 'Refine My Results' on the left-hand side of the screen to refine your search results by resource type, e.g. 'journals' or 'ejournals', 'books or 'ebooks', campus library, date, and more.

New Database: Australian Medicines Handbook (AMH)

The Australian Medicines Handbook is an up-to-date, comparative online resource providing information about most of the therapeutic drugs marketed in Australia. It is produced jointly by the Australasian Society of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacologists and Toxicologists (ASCEPT), the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, and the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia – and is a required resource for practicing Australian pharmacists.

AMH includes information on indications, precautions, dosage, adverse effects, and drug interactions, and the content includes new drugs, blood products, immunoglobulins, and specialised drugs.

The Handbook includes a set of “Guides” which provide general guidance on prescribing, and specific advice about medication use in special populations such as pregnant women. General issues such as drug availability in Australia, use of drugs in sport, and the reporting of adverse effects are described.

The online Handbook is updated twice yearly (in January and July).

Please note that CSU has only 2 concurrent user licences for this resource.

New Database: Embase

The Elsevier Embase database is a major biomedical and pharmaceutical database covering: drug research, pharmacology, pharmaceutics, toxicology, clinical and experimental human medicine, health policy and management, public health, occupational health, environmental health, drug dependence and abuse, psychiatry, forensic medicine, and biomedical engineering and instrumentation. There is also some coverage of nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, psychology, and alternative medicine.

It includes over 24 million records from more than 7,500 mostly peer-reviewed journals, and from more than 2000 biomedical titles not indexed by MEDLINE. Embase also contains almost 800 conferences and more than 260,000 conference abstracts, drawn primarily from journals and journal supplements published since 2009.

The database provides for five search options:

* Advanced
* Drug Name
* Disease Name
* Article Search (for a particular article)

Although full-text is not included within the database, in many cases the ‘View Full Text’ link in bibliographic records can be used to find the full-text in another CSU-subscribed database.
