  • Every picture tells a story. Boy bitten by a lizard by Caravaggio Waldemar Januszczak - Reveals the background to Caravaggio’s Boy Bitten by a Lizard, which depicts a youth recoiling in pain as a lizard lurking among flowers bites his middle finger. Caravaggio was a penniless artist when he created this early work not long after his arrival in Rome in 1592 and Januszczak sets out to explain the meaning behind the symbolism contained within the painting. • Every picture tells a story. The birth of Venus by Botticelli - Another patron family was the Medicis. "Venus and Mars" was found in the Villa de Castello, the country estate of Lorenzo di Pier Francesco di Medici, and was possibly commissioned by Lorenzo di Medici on the occasion of Pier Francesco’s marriage. Venus is a picture of modesty and vulnerability, which is what was expected of a woman of that time. The presenter thinks that the real story behind "The Birth of Venus" is to be found in Hesiod’s Theogeny where Venus is said to be the nautical fruit of Uranus’s frothing testicles. In Botticelli’s painting Venus isn’t born out of the sea. She arrives on land which is full of sprouting flowers and trees. Therefore it is likely that this was a painting commissioned in honour of the arrival of another fertile bride in the Medici family. Check Availability
